Maddison Andrews, Kiera Forse, Ashley Gringhuis, Edie Luo, Elise Ngo, Jobelle Quijano

January 25 – March 7, 2020

Vulnerability comes from the Latin to wound, thus, to be vulnerable
is to be at risk. Simultaneously, to be vulnerable constitutes our
capacities to be human, to be done and undone by others in our
(inter)subjective becoming(s). Exposed brings together paintings,
collages, prints and photographs exploring relations with the self and
others through representations of the body. The works in this show
negotiate both the anguish and the promise of becoming undone, and thus
constituted otherwise.

The formal qualities of Lou’s puzzle lay bare
the doing and undoing of relationships through the potential for a fracturing
of representation, ultimately assembling the tensions of silence found in the
jaw. Andrews uses appropriated images of the female body to question consent
and representation in tissues of concealment and exposure. Likewise, Forse’s
work interrupts the hegemonic structuring of gender with representations of
vulnerable masculinities. Ngo explores the relation between the self and the
brain in the promise of neuroplasticity and the rewiring of the brain in the
production of new and more liveable neural networks. Gringhuis uses her own
positionality to explore the anxiety and confusion of navigating being in the
world, and thus, life itself. Quijano too, is exploring the anxiety that underpins
our relations with others by negotiating the ways that joyful self
representation is always fraught with the risk of ridicule and shame.
Collectively, the works in this show negotiate both the anguish and the promise
of becoming undone, and thus constituted otherwise.
