Reception: November 22, 2019 5-7pm
Most Importantly, Love Your Mother is a photographic exploration negotiating the artist’s shifting relationship with her mother. Pawlak’s work is motivated by patriarchal norms that equate womanhood with motherhood in ways that limit our capacity to relate to our mothers as women independent of their children. This body of work pulls in and out of portraiture and still-life imagery– in the form of documents, photographs, and letters– in an effort to understand her mother’s identity outside of motherhood towards a more complex recognition of her subjectivity.
