Event Details

Please join us at the Union Gallery on Wednesday, February 26 at 6:00pm for a performative reading of A Love Letter to Audre Lorde by Devin West. A Love Letter to Audre Lorde documents the queer intellectual kinship between black queer feminism poet-scholar, Audre Lorde, and a white, queer feminist artist-scholar of another generation.

This performance is in conjunction with West’s exhibition Queer Portraits of Invisible Grief (January 25–March 7), a constellation of conceptual portrait installations exploring the complex cultural relationship between queer kinship and structures of heteronormativity.

DEVIN WEST is a genderfluid, queer, settler artist-scholar from northern Saskatchewan. Through a conceptual installation art practice, West works with structural themes of tension, suspension and disruption, challenging and disturbing notions of femininity and masculinity as stable embodied binary signals of heteronormativity. Devin uses artistic intervention and research-creation to encourage and engage public cultural dialogue about genderfluid resilience co-habiting in tension with heteronormativity. Scholarly and artistic pursuits are influenced by divergent career paths in clinical social work prior to becoming a master carpenter. Devin has a Master of Arts degree in Gender Studies, and is currently a doctoral student in Cultural Studies, Queens University, and Research Fellow at Modern Fuel Artist Run Centre.

This event is free and open to all. All are encouraged and welcome to attend.
