In 1839 (after seeing a daguerreotype for the first time), the French painter Paul Delaroche announced “From today, painting is dead.” Kenneth Clarke and Herbert Read famously debated the relevance of painting in the modern world a century later. Almost a century after that, Why Painting Still Matters titled a major show at The Tate in 2013; just last year an exhibition at The Whitechapel in London unapologetically took on board, said Adrian Searle, “the idea that it can do things other media can’t.” In this show OKWA artists address the question(s): What does paint do for you in your expression? Why do you choose it rather than another medium?
