Event Details
Dating back thousands of years, this ancient practice of ornamenting metal was one of the earliest used to create iconography on sacred objects. In the 1900s the Arts and Crafts Movement in Britain focused on authenticity and revived embossed metalwork. And now we carry the tradition forward. In a jam-packed afternoon, we will first and most importantly we will talk about safety practices. Their kit will include a basic tool, written reference material to take home, and how to evaluate the supplies and materials they might find in stores. There will be a sample of aluminium to practice on and a copper sheet for a final design.
We will start working by “playing around” on the practice metal, trying out different tools, and getting a feel for what the metal and different tools can do.
We will talk about how to design for metal relief work and how to transfer an idea to metal. And we will learn how to mount a finished metal plaque for display.

TUFTING is the general name for a group of old handwork skills originally used to make functional and practical products from fabric scraps. Originally used to make floor rugs gradually these practical floor warmers evolved to also become decorative art— beautiful florals, vibrant geometric patterns, etc. and some were landscape “pictures” that warmed the heart and graced their walls. Patterns were sold through the Sears catalogues as early as the 1920s.
We will breathe new life into these old skills. You will learn the basic principles and materials for rug making and other practical things and also how to enliven your creative direction. There are no hard and fast “rules” and your style will blossom into contemporary products and art pieces.

On the first weekend of May every year, Jane’s Walk, a free festival of volunteer-led walks, takes place in hundreds of cities around the world including Kingston. This year, there will be 20 uniquely different walks. The walks will include various aspects of human life and wildlife, past and present. They will lead us through greenspaces and historic neighbourhoods and a couple will take us to final resting places.
Details of the walks, times, leaders and meeting place maybe found here https://janeswalkkingston.wordpress.com/. The site also includes information about Jane Jacobs who inspired us to get to know our cities and our neighbours by walking or bicycling.

As the half-blood son of a Greek god, Percy Jackson has newly-discovered powers he can’t control, a destiny he doesn’t want, and a mythology textbook’s worth of monsters on his trail. When Zeus’s master lightning bolt is stolen and Percy becomes the prime suspect, he has to find and return the bolt to prove his innocence and prevent a war between the gods. But to succeed on his quest, Percy will have to do more than catch the thief. He must travel to the Underworld and back; solve the riddle of the Oracle, which warns him of betrayal by a friend; and come to terms with the father who abandoned him. Adapted from the best-selling book The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan and featuring a thrilling original rock score, The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical is an action-packed mythical adventure “worthy of the gods” (Time Out New York).
This musical is a part of The Juvenis Festival. The festival is a project of Blue Canoe Theatrical that began in 2016. This 10 day-long festival gives young people an opportunity to act, sing, dance, perform, and showcase their artistic talents, as well as take free workshops to build on their interests and skills in the arts. Everyone involved in this festival is under the age of 30, including all paid staff positions and participants. While our workshops are only open to youth, we invite audience members of all ages to view Juvenis productions and events!

Based loosely on Puccini’s La Boheme, Jonathan Larson’s Rent follows a year in the life of a group of impoverished young artists and musicians struggling to survive and create in New York’s Lower East Side, under the shadow of HIV/AIDS. The physical and emotional complications of the disease pervade the lives of Roger, Mimi, Tom and Angel.
