This is a more focused workshop geared towards those interested in gaining industry-standard knowledge that will help them enter the professional field of comics, whether as an artist, writer, or any other position. This workshop teaches fundamentals such as composition, panel-to-panel reading, and page design. Some level of drawing skills might be helpful but is not necessary as this class is less focused on artistic skills and is instead focused on critical thinking, problem-solving, and understanding the approach and principles that go into creating a mainstream comic page. Attendees will leave this class with a clear understanding of basic design principles, improved literacy in the field of sequential arts, and invaluable knowledge guaranteed to inform and strengthen their approach to creating a comic page.

This ancient practice was one of the earlier methods used to ornament sacred objects with iconography. The Arts and Crafts Movement revived tooling in their quest for simplicity and as a direct expression of the maker’s hand.
And hands-on this workshop will be! Participants will first receive safety advice, a sample tool, and a piece of metal to practice on. Their kit will also contain a piece of sheet copper for their final design. Photographs of ancient work and actual samples made in the 1950s will inspire!
We will start by “playing around” on the sample metal, trying out different tools, learning how the metal reacts to them, and the general characteristics of metal so participants can evaluate the supplies and materials they might find in stores.

Poke it! Hook it! Punch it! Latch it! Tuft it!
“Rug Making 101” will explore how to hook a rug, as well as other rug making techniques including punch needle, latch hook, Scandinavian rhea knotting, and using a pokie.
Old homes were cold and drafty so resourceful people found clever ways to make rugs with odds and ends of leftover fabric and yarn. They also discovered that rugmaking techniques could be adapted to enliven household linens and even clothing. Now it’s your opportunity to breath new life into these old skills!
In this action-packed workshop, we will explore the classic techniques with a wide variety of tools, and examine a few historic examples for inspiration. There are no hard and fast “rules” and your individual style will blossom into contemporary products and art pieces.
A piece of basic backing material will be provided and there will be multiple tools for you to experiment with.
