Artist Details
Portia "Po" Chapman (BFAH, B.Ed, ACE Queen's U) is a Kingston based published and award winning professional artist, illustrator, drum maker and community muralist reclaiming her Indigenous ancestry. Po identifies as a "Visual Storyteller." She is known for her own innovative, bright colour blocking style inspired by her childhood years growing up in the forest and dreaming while playing beneath thickets of wild grapevine silhouettes cast by the noonday sun. Po's preferred mediums are digital, and acrylic on rawhide or board. In the Queen's community, Po's popularity is due to her digital icons for the Office of Indigenous Initiatives and Faculty of Education websites, her cover art for the Journal of Indigenous Studies, and her mural in Kingston Hall's Reflection Room. As well, Po has led numerous art workshops/talks at the Agnes and the University. Po's artwork is most often described as "Beautiful." When Po is asked why she creates beautiful artworks that inspire reflection and the sharing of fond memories, she responds: "Life just feels better when we smile."
